AQS
Dear pet owners,
AQS has taken care of animals during their period of quarantine following their arrival at Narita Airport since 1975. On January 1, 2000, quarantine for rabies started for cats, monkeys, foxes, raccoons, and skunks as well as dogs, and AQS has cared for many animals since then.
On November 6, 2004, the import quarantine system was revised under the Rabies Prevention Law. Individual animals that can be identified by microchips, have been given rabies inoculations twice at 30 day intervals, received a later antibody test showing their antibodies level above the standard value (0.5IU/mL), and have spent a period of 180 days waiting in the country of origin after the test, can now complete their inspection quickly with an examination of certification documents and confirmation of the identity of the animal.(For details, please refer to the web site of the Animal Quarantine Service at http://www.maff-aqs.go.jp.)
However, cats and dogs younger than 10 months of age must remain in quarantine for a period of 180 days.
Also, an animal that has not spent a full 180 days waiting period in its country of origin must, after its arrival in Japan, remain in quarantine for a period equal to the difference between 180 days and the number of days it spent in its country of origin, even if the test results show its antibody level is above the standard value.
When an animal that has arrived in Japan is subject to quarantine for any reason, AQS takes custody of the animal if it is asked to do so by its owner.
